Permission to Pause: A Back-to-School Message for Moms

October is here, and school is officially back in full swing. The children are settling into routines, learning how their teachers want things done, completing homework, and finding their rhythm. As parents, we’re also beginning to find our own rhythm in the day-to-day—getting everyone where they need to be, managing schedules, and adjusting to the demands of a new school year.

You would think that as things begin to settle down, we would automatically feel more settled, too. But for many mothers, that isn’t always the case.

Sometimes, when the chaos quiets down, we finally have space to notice how unsettled we actually feel.

And that’s okay.

This can be a really powerful time to lean into those feelings rather than immediately trying to fix or push them away. It’s an opportunity to pause, check in with yourself, and intentionally make space for self-care.

Your children are learning. They are growing. They are figuring things out—and sometimes, the day-to-day struggles they experience are simply a part of life. We don’t have to solve every problem for them or carry every emotion for them.

In fact, one of the greatest things we can model for our children is what it looks like to take care of ourselves.

When our children see us setting boundaries, resting, asking for help, prioritizing our well-being, and making space for the things that bring us joy, we are teaching them something far more powerful than any lecture could. We are helping them develop emotional security and showing them that caring for yourself is not selfish—it is necessary.

So, I want to challenge you over the next month, before the holiday season arrives and life becomes busy all over again: choose yourself a little more intentionally.

Revisit some of the self-care practices you may have pushed aside. Create space for rest. Do something that brings you joy. Set a boundary. Ask for help. Take a moment to simply breathe and be present.

Pay attention to what happens when you begin caring for yourself with the same intention you give to everyone else.

You may notice a decrease in your stress, an increase in your happiness, and a greater sense of satisfaction—not only within your family, but within yourself.

Because you are more than a mother.

You are a woman who is growing, evolving, and flourishing in this present season of your life.

And your children deserve to see what that looks like, too.
